CO-design of Interaction-Technologies to support Neurodiverse Sensemaking (COINS)

Many technologies for children with autism focus on teaching ‘appropriate’ social skills, often based on neurotypical norms. This project deliberately takes a different approach. It explores how design can support social interaction from a neurodiverse perspective — one that respects each individual’s unique way of being.

In co-creation with two specialised studios in interactive product design, the project develops systems that help children with autism engage with others in playful, physical ways, both at home and in school. These systems use tangible objects and nonverbal communication to reduce stress and anxiety, and make social interaction more accessible for everyone involved.

The systems are co-designed with children with autism, parents, teachers, care professionals and lived-experience experts. The project delivers both working prototypes and new design principles that strengthen neuro-inclusive approaches within participatory design.

€41,599 will be used as a PPP program grant.
