A Shared and Legitimate Narrative – Reasoning and Argumentation in the Public Design Practice
Within the programme De Publieke Ontwerppraktijk (PONT), designers collaborate with government institutions on complex societal challenges. In this public context, it’s not only about what works, but also about what fits, is allowed, and is appropriate. This places different demands on the design process — and on how designers justify their decisions.
This project explores how designers and civil servants can develop reasoning and argumentation that aligns with the public context in which they operate. How do you substantiate a design decision in such a setting, and how do you communicate it in a convincing and legitimate way to stakeholders?
The project combines knowledge from design studies, public administration and argumentation theory. It contributes both to academic insight and to practical tools that support professionals in the public design domain — with a focus on strengthening legitimacy, support and societal impact.
€250,000 will be used as a PPP program grant.
