Open Call: This is not a Simulation

Who can offer action perspectives for a viable, resilient and sustainable future? The Creative Industries Fund NL calls on designers to explore new forms of intimacy and meeting within public spaces with concrete social-spatial interventions. To this end, designers work together with local partners - municipalities, social organisations, entrepreneurs or residents - on issues that have arisen as a result of the outbreak of the coronavirus. Designers can submit a proposal by 10 September 2020.

Reason
The Netherlands is facing a major challenge. The coronavirus outbreak has major consequences for our daily lives. In recent months, the impact of the virus has been painfully visible in all kinds of areas: on our health and our healthcare sector, but also on our personal freedom of movement, in business, education and our social life. Everyone is affected in their own way by the disease itself or by the measures taken to combat the spread of Covid-19. Rarely has the local impact of global developments been so tangible for everyone.

Reappreciation of values
In recent months, many of our daily joint activities have been put on hold. This has not only led to a great loss, but also to a reappreciation of our social activities. We have come to appreciate our 'home' and our local living environment again. We see enormous resilience in society and are more satisfied than ever in helping others. We are rapidly adopting the possibilities of digital technology and appreciate new forms of intimacy. At the same time, we once again experience our connection with nature. In many ways, the global crisis is putting the social aspects of globalisation and urbanisation in a different light. In addition, it also raises more fundamental questions about the sustainability of our socio-economic system and the viability of the planet in the future.

Role of design
What does our common future look like? Will we soon be going back to 'old' routines? Or are we able to create new ways of embedding intimacy and meeting in practice within the public domain, thus building together a viable, resilient and sustainable future? Designers - such as architects, urban planners, designers, social designers, speculative designers or digital makers - can make an important contribution to this demand. They have the knowledge and expertise to challenge people and organisations to think beyond the existing. Moreover, they are able to tackle these current challenges at local level with concrete, visible measures in the living environment.

Call
With this open call, the Creative Industries Fund invites designers to submit a proposal for concrete social-spatial interventions in publicly accessible spaces, such as parks, squares, shopping streets, but also catering, libraries or sports complexes. To this end, designers work together with local partners - municipalities, social organisations, entrepreneurs or residents - and with local interventions also offer action perspectives toward a possible new social and sustainable future.
