Open Call Creative Industries Fund NL: Working differently on city, village and country #2

Looking at the arrival of the National Environment Vision (NOVI) and the new Environment and Planning Act, the Creative Industries Fund NL invites designers to develop new working methods together with municipalities, aimed at co-creation at the local level. This open call offers the opportunity for municipalities to use local design force to activate local partners and, together with the local network, to get started with an integrated design approach on current socio-spatial challenges in their own municipality.

Context
The Netherlands faces a large number of urgent challenges. Global challenges such as energy transition, climate adaptation, mobility, health and social inclusion have major consequences at the local level. For example, they make new demands on our living environment. Central government is responding to these challenges with a vision of the future of the Netherlands. Central to this is the interdependence of the social and spatial domain, and the importance of cooperation between different domains. But this also requires new forms of local government. To be able to formulate answers to the major social challenges at the local level, new forms of cooperation are needed between local government, the business community, knowledge institutions, social organizations and residents. Moreover, with the entry into force of the Environmental Act, a new legislative system will be created for local government in 2021, which will determine the framework conditions for this partnership.

Designers
The aforementioned socio-spatial challenges require an integrated approach, whereby choices are not imposed from above, but are made in a local partnership. The big question is, however, how do we shape these new forms of cooperation and thus the integrated approach to socio-spatial tasks in concrete terms? Designers - such as architects, urban designers, city makers, social and service designers - can play an important role in this by introducing new views and methods at the intersection of social and physical renewal. They have the knowledge and expertise to shape new co-creation processes and to guide municipalities to work together with stakeholders and users. They are able to formulate answers to the major social challenges at the local level with concrete visible measures in the living environment.
