How do you start a collaboration? PONT developed knowledge

Within the Public Design Practice (PONT) program, the Development Workspace creates instruments, methods, and processes that strengthen collaboration between government and designers. One of the themes: Bundling Design Power. Here, knowledge has been developed on how to start a collaboration and how to make it sustainable. These insights are relevant for every creative professional working with others.

Collaboration models

You have a project with high energy and a clear intention to collaborate. But which structure should you choose? In Bundling Design Power, four fundamentally different models of collaboration are described – each with its own logic and dynamics. They show how designers work together with each other, with public organizations, and with other parties. By understanding these differences, you can identify the model that best fits your consortium.

Securing collaboration

Once you’ve chosen a model, the next question is: how do you secure the collaboration? Think of agreements, legal frameworks, and what to do if the design challenge turns out differently or more complex than expected. For this purpose, PONT developed a toolbox with practical tools that is continuously expanded. The toolbox currently includes:

  • Mazzel or Misfortium template: secure your collaboration in three steps
  • Code of Conduct for Collaborating Designers
  • Role cards
  • Creative Passport

PONT is carried out by Dutch Design Foundation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, and supported by CLICKNL. The program contributes to the knowledge objectives of the Agenda Ontwerpkracht, specifically chapter 4.3: Developing the power of the collective.
