Follow up call SIDN Fund: In charge of your data 2

We produce and use data every day, actively and passively. As an internet user, we play a crucial role in the data society, but this role does not translate into a position as an equal player. In fact, in exchange for "free" services, we are often passive data suppliers instead of being in charge of our own data.

This follow-up call has sharpened the focus even further. This call is mainly related to:

  • Insight & awareness
Do we actually know what happens if you click on agree to share location data with Buienradar? Or what Google can do with the data you share via Google Home? It is also often unknown how tools like these can be used in a more privacy and security-friendly manner, and there is limited attention for alternative services and tools. The SIDN fund wants to contribute to greater awareness in this area. With these cal projects they support the risks, but also the opportunities for improvement in the use of tools and systems.

  • Data minimisation
We (unnecessarily) share a lot of data with third parties. Do you have a concrete project whereby internet users only need to share the data that is necessary for a specific service or product? Data minimisation is encouraged by the SIDN fund, particularly when it comes to sharing (personal) data within public domains.

  • Alternatives
The fact that there are few alternatives to commonly used platforms and services does not contribute to increasing our data autonomy; there is often no choice for a strong alternative. This applies to the internet user in general, but also within various public domains parties struggle with 'platformisation'. Think for example of student tracking systems, systems for sharing patient data, etc.
Do you have an idea for an (open source) alternative or suggestions for improvement of existing tools to give users (or specific target groups) more control over their data?

The call
The call "In charge of your data 2" is open until 28 April, 1 p.m., for:

  • Larger and already tried and tested projects (contributions up to a maximum of 75,000 euros for the further development of an existing proof of concept, promising concepts or results of (scientific) research into useful applications).
