DeFlat Kleiburg grote winnaar DDW

The Dutch Design Awards were awarded again during the Dutch Design Week. DeFlat Kleiburg by NL Architects was rewarded with the Future Award and with that is this year’s big winner. In addition to the Future Award, they also won the category Habitat. The jury was unanimous: “DeFlat Kleiburg gives off a positive and clear signal that community building has a future. This approach offers opportunities for the enormous amount of similar challenges nationally and internationally.”

Originally, the flat in the K-district of the Amsterdam Bijlmermeer was to be demolished. Renovation was deemed too costly. One consortium thought otherwise and hired NL Architects and XVW architecture. The building was completely stripped and renovated. In doing so, DeFlat Kleiburg addresses an urgent topic: around the world, a large supply of buildings from the 60s and 70s is in need of a renovation, rather than a wrecking ball. The jury finds it especially important that a tangible solution is offered for this problem and hopes that this example will be emulated.

Atelier NL
Zandglas (Sand Glass) by Atelier NL won the Dutch Design Award in the category Design Research. In this project, designers Nadine Sterk and Lonny van Ryswyck, after long-term research and experimenting and the thorough analyses of recipes, succeeded in melting “wild” sand into unique, high-quality glass objects.
