CIIIC and CLICKNL International launch knowledge network for immersive experiences and public values

During CreativeNL's mission to SXSW in Austin, Texas, CIIIC and CLICKNL International created - in practice - the beginnings of an inclusive community for researchers, creators and policy makers in the field of immersive experiences (IX) and public values: the Public Values & Immersive Futures Network. With this, the Dutch creative industry hopes to take the lead internationally in developments in these areas.

Prior to the launch during the Empowering Change: Immersive Tech & Global Policies program section, the first, Trans-Atlantic exchange took place yesterday between over 30 Canadian, American and European academics who shared what research is ongoing, what needs there are in practice, and where more research can help.

Globally, IX is seen as one of the drivers of the third major digital transition

Quartermaster CIIIC (Creative Industries Immersive Impact Coalition), Melchior Kanyemesha: 'Immersive experiences are playing an increasingly important role in our lives - at the intersection of technology, culture and society. Think virtual reality, 360-degree image/video, augmented reality, chatbots, interactive animation and games. Globally, IX is seen as one of the drivers of the third great digital transition, which will thus have a major impact on our daily lives, work, learning and recreation.'

'Then it is important', adds Mieke Dols, Program Manager of Regieorgaan SIA (which promotes the quality and impact of the practice-oriented research of universities of applied sciences, ed.), 'to examine with each other what opportunities there are, what bottlenecks and learning points there are, and especially how public values are dealt with. From a practice-oriented research perspective, it is important to contribute from the triangle of education, research and practice. I am, in a very positive sense, curious what international exchange will bring.'

Invaluable

Simone van Bennekom of CLICKNL International: 'Whether you are a policymaker, researcher or technologist/techie, your unique perspective and expertise are invaluable in co-creating ethical, impactful and immersive futures. Our international network fosters and embraces an ethos of collaboration and provides a platform for individuals from different disciplines to engage in thoughtful dialogue and ultimately, most importantly, collaborative research.'

'The network also fits with our ambition to enter into long-term public-private partnerships (PPPs) with other countries, where, for example, one country has a more developed ecosystem for immersive experiences and another country has curbed the 'dangers' more and anchored public values more. For example, we are inspired by Canada, which is at the forefront of IX, with whom we have been exchanging knowledge for some time thanks to our expert Vera Kuipers.'

It would be nice to see the international network take the next step by the end of this year

To add: 'The peer-to-peer network is open to everyone. At the end of this year Immersive Tech Week will take place in Rotterdam again, it would be nice if the international network has made the next step by then.'
