CALL | DEVELOPMENT GRANTS FOR CONSORTIUM FORMATION

Sustainable Living Labs - phase 1

The science world has a need for experimentation in a real-world setting, whereby sensors and extensive monitoring are used to acquire new insights about logistics, transport, accessibility and mobility. NWO and the TKI Dinalog therefor have decided to develop a number of socially responsible Living Labs.

To develop the Living Labs, NWO and Dinalog have published a Sustainable Living Labs call. In this call small grants can be applied for to further develop ideas for a Living Lab, form an interdisciplinary consortium and secure support of public and private parties. This can be done by organizing workshops and meetings, for example, or by appointing someone who will actively lead the network. Professionals and researchers from the creative industry may also make use of these resources, by joining this call.

What for
The resources in this call (phase 1) are to be used to develop robust consortia for setting up innovative living labs. In the follow-up call (phase 2) it will be possible to apply for funding for the actual execution of the living labs, which will be expected to be a combination of innovating fundamental and applied research of a high level, that contributes to the application and scaling of the developed insights and solutions.

For whom
Although the call originates from the TKI of the top sector Logistics, researchers and professionals from every sector are welcome; interdisciplinary research teams and the quality of the consortium is of vital importance. Applications for Living Lab Development Grants will be submitted by the head of submissions on behalf of the project consortium. The head of submissions (and possible co-submitter(s)) is (are) a researcher(s), appointed for at least the duration of the application process and the duration of the project at a knowledge institute.

What to apply for
Resources may be applied for to form a consortium and the further development of a living lab idea up to a maximum of €30.000 per application, to be spent within 6 months after being granted. The resources will be granted lump sum.

The grant:
• Can only be applied for for Living Lab development, such as organizing workshops or meetings, a pilot study, or the appointment of a leader. It concerns activities that start after the start date mentioned in the grant letter. Costs made on the formal start date of the project will not be eligible for funding.
• Is not allowed to replace existing funding.
• Will not be awarded for contract research.
• Must be in accordance and compliance with European state support legislation.
• Can be applied for to cover both personal as well as material costs made in preparation of a living lab. For the personal costs the VSNU rates apply to the universities and the HOT rates apply to TO2 and universities of applied sciences.

The non-research partners in the consortium must make a concrete contribution (cash and/or in-kind) to the research. The minimal required co-financing of the entire consortium cash and/or in-kind is 25% of the project budget. The maximum grant is €30.000. This means that in case a grant of €30.000 is applied for, a minimum of €10.000 must be infused in co-financing of non-research partners (public or private). The amount of infused co-financing is not allowed to exceed the applied for grant. The co-financing may be done in cash or in-kind. Co-financing must be capitalized specified.
