DiscoVRy: A Real Virtual Reality Experience
Since 2020, Will Hurst has been working as a Senior Assistant Professor in the Information Technology Group at Wageningen University & Research (WUR). He is actively researching advanced visualization techniques and new data-driven visualization tools that can better support the transition to advanced methodologies, decision-making processes and outreach. At DRIVE, he shows recent examples of such forms of research, thereby giving an idea of the possibilities that are being developed together in collaboration with WANDER.
WANDER is a WUR-based hub founded with the ambition to become a world leader in the scientific development and of immersive visualizations in the domain of food and living environment to solve the socio-ecological challenges. WANDER, functions as a Shared Research and Education facility, a space where the WUR community focuses on developing solutions in co-creation with stakeholders. Interdisciplinary research, education and external involvement accelerate developments. The core expertise of those involved is to transform complex and abstract data into augmented experiences, virtual prototyping, real-time immersive simulations, advanced data-driven 3D visualizations and simulations.
From the diversity of areas in which Dr. Will Hurst has published internationally, such as data science, creative technologies, critical infrastructure protection and 3D graphics, his knowledge and fascination for his current research and applications for data science through visualization is apparent.
Will Hurst previously worked as a Reader at Liverpool John Moores University (Liverpool, UK), where he also obtained his PhD in Computer Science (2014). In Liverpool he taught courses (2014-2020), including data visualization, content production for digital games, internet and web technologies, interactive multimedia systems, digital storytelling and interactive media and games development.
