The Dutch landscape has traditionally been a production landscape that has been used on a large scale for the production of food and the extraction of raw materials. This existing production landscape will change significantly in the coming years. Extraction from renewable energy sources must be significantly scaled up to achieve the European climate targets. Deterioration of agricultural land and loss of biodiversity requires new forms of food production. At the same time, the need for nature recreation is increasing. All this places a major claim on the landscape design of the Netherlands and requires more space than is available in our country. The complexity of the transition task of the landscape is therefore great.

Economic, technological, social, cultural-historical and spatial aspects interact strongly. This necessitates a new, more integrated approach, in which organisations from various sectors work together. Linking different challenges and multifunctional land use can lead to new insights. Designers make an important contribution to this process. They are able to map complex systems and large chains of a transition process, unravel the complexity of this major task and make it understandable. Moreover, designers can visualise where assignments and functions can be linked; they can make divergent interests visible and bring them together. That is why the deployment of design power at the beginning of the chain offers excellent opportunities for a smooth transition of the transition process.

This call is aimed at innovators who want to collaborate in an investigative way. Examples are coalitions of provinces, municipalities, area developers, landowners, parties from the energy and agricultural sector, network managers, food producers, nature organisations, heritage specialists and / or residents' collectives, together with designers.
