The Dutch fashion industry overstocks 21.5 million annually. For fashion stores, this means a loss of revenue of € 313.5 million. Shops, wholesalers and manufacturers are left with unsellable clothing as they have predicted the size, fit and colour wrong. Unsold clothing stock ensures revenue loss and senseless environmental impact, but interestingly enough it hasn't been properly researched. Therefore MVO Nederland commissioned Conclusr research to conduct a survey among 379 retailers and wholesalers. 70 foreign apparel manufacturers were also surveyed. It shows that 6.5% of all newly produced clothing are left behind by producers, wholesalers and retailers. These trousers, T-shirts and dresses never reach the original target consumer. The proportion of unsold clothing stores is 4.2%. The main reason clothing remains unsold because it is the wrong size, fit and color. Read the full article (in Dutch) on
