Collaborating for Change | Keep Pedaling!

In recent years, the number of traffic accidents involving older cyclists has risen sharply. At the same time, cycling is essential for many older adults to remain physically and socially active. But traditional safety campaigns and bike training programs had little impact—if they reached this group at all.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and various partners, service design agency Ideate developed Doortrappen: a new approach combining behaviour change, awareness, and enjoyment. Instead of focusing on instruction, the program starts from the perspective of older cyclists themselves. Through conversations, local collaborations, and community activities, bicycle safety becomes both approachable and meaningful.

Doortrappen is now active in over 225 Dutch municipalities and continues to grow, with new interventions, training and tools. The approach also shows potential for the social domain, as it contributes to overall wellbeing and public health, alongside road safety.

The video is part of the series 'Collaborating for Change.' It shows what becomes possible when designers, researchers, governments, and social organizations combine their knowledge. This collaboration helps to approach stuck systems differently — and truly get them moving.
