Open call: working differently on living

The Netherlands faces a complex housing challenge. How can this challenge be tackled sustainably, inclusively and based on current and future housing needs? The Creative Industries Fund NL invites designers to work together with governments, organisations, experts and citizens on an integrated approach to current and future housing issues. Do you have a design research proposal focused on the housing assignment in the Netherlands and do you want to work on a sustainable and inclusive design proposal in which current and future housing needs are central? And do you want to collaborate with local or regional stakeholders and relevant experts? Submit a proposal for design research aimed at innovative perspectives, strategies and solutions for the housing challenge in the Netherlands.

The housing assignment in the Netherlands
The Dutch housing market is stuck. The housing supply is too one-sided, house prices are skyrocketing and the flow has come to a halt. Finding a suitable and affordable home for sale or rental has become impossible for more and more groups in society. The solution is now mainly sought in building as quickly and as much as possible. It is becoming increasingly clear that this is not the only and most desirable way of tackling the housing challenge. Especially when you realise that diversity within the housing supply in the light of the changing housing needs must be high on the agenda. But also because approaching the housing challenge must be seen in conjunction with tackling the climate challenge and the task of promoting social inclusion in cities and villages.

Who is this call for?
In view of the complexity of the housing assignment, an integrated approach is necessary. An approach in which social, economic, climatic, cultural, policy, ecological, heritage and spatial aspects are closely related. This means that a wide range of stakeholders must work together in this, from municipalities, area developers, housing associations, social initiatives, market parties and heritage specialists, to housing cooperatives, VVEs and other collectives of residents. Linking various interests and aspects and combining different tasks can lead to new insights and opportunities. Designers make an important contribution in this process. They are able to make the complexity of the assignment transparent and open to discussion. Designers can visualise where connections of different aspects and assignments can take place. They can also make divergent interests visible and bring them together based on the common interest.
