Call Sustainable Living Labs - Transport and Mobility

The purpose of this call (phase 2) is to use the available funds to set up innovative living labs in which research will be carried out and experiments performed. It concerns so-called 'lighthouse projects', which are expected to be a combination of innovative fundamental, applied and practice-oriented research of a high level.

NWO and TKI Dinalog have decided to facilitate the development of a number of Sustainable Living Labs with an NWO Responsible Innovation approach for the Top Sector Logistics in which a clear connection is sought with the Top Sector Water & Maritime and the Top Sector Energy. Funding can be requested to further develop, set up and realise these living labs with a consortium that has a strong interdisciplinary composition.

Please note: In mid-November 2018 the application form for this call has been changed on two points. NWO asks applicants to use the adapted application form.

Adjustment 1: A limit on the word and pagecount is stated. The following has been added: Please note: a total limit of 10 pages (5000 words) applies for question 3a.
Adjustment 2: The following (in bold) has been added to highlight the Responsible innovation approach: Describe the following topics: scientific quality (including the demand articulation from practice and the responsible innovation approach) and the scientific method.
The adapted application form has been at the bottom of this funding page and in ISAAC since mid-November 2018. For questions and comments, please contact Wendie Kingma (w.kingma@nwo.nl).

Purpose
The purpose of this call (phase 2) is to use the available funds to set up innovative living labs in which research will be carried out and experiments performed. It concerns so-called 'lighthouse projects', which are expected to be a combination of innovative fundamental, applied and practice-oriented research of a high level. Due to their visibility, these projects will contribute to the application and scaling up of the insights and solutions developed, and accordingly result in structural changes. Innovation in the transport and mobility system will be the main objective of every project.

Who can apply
Applications for Lighthouse projects are submitted by the main applicant on behalf of the project consortium.

The main applicant is a senior researcher at a Dutch university, a lector at a university of applied sciences or a senior researcher at a TO2 institute or an NWO or KNAW institute.
Public and/or private stakeholders may not submit an application themselves but may be part of the project consortium. Stakeholders must be part of the project consortium. Besides public and private stakeholders who might want to be closely involved, the consortium also consists of other stakeholders (such as residents. foundations, etc.) and it is important that they also contribute ideas to the innovation and implementation during the project.

Collaboration with researchers from other knowledge institutions: at least one sub-project is realised by researchers employed at a different university, research Institute (TO2) or university of applied sciences than the main applicant. Researchers from the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences are involved in the consortium.

What to apply for
Funding can be requested to set up and design a living lab in which research shall take place. This includes data collection, data processing, research, knowledge transfer and management of the consortium. The maximum grant per proposal is € 2,000,000. The minimum grant that can be applied for is € 1,000,000. In addition, co-funding 33% (1/3) must be provided for the total project budget. When applying for the maximum grant, the total project budget would therefore amount to at least € 3,000,000.

A living lab application consists of two sub-budgets. Each sub-budget has its own budget form (Excel). The two sub-budgets jointly form the budget for the living lab.

When to apply
The deadline for submitting proposals is 19 February 2019, at 14:00 hours CE(S)T.
